Hoof and related Tips for Horse Owners

If you find your horse has a foreign object penetrating the sole or the hoof wall, please do not call the farrier...call your vet! The vet wil lmost likely need to 1. Xray the object (while still in the foot) to see where and what it has damaged and 2. administer a tetanus booster and any pain control medications as well as antibiotics.

Think your horse may have foundered? Call your vet and farrier, as they will need to work on the horse together. It helps if your farrier is in the loop as far as sinking, degree of rotation, etc... we would suggest that while waiting for the vet, you go ahead and soak the horse in ice water or a stream if you have no other sources. Studies have shown icing the horse's feet and legs (up to the mid cannon bone) during the earliest phases, have dramatically reduced the long term effects of a mild to moderate founder. Do not administer any pain medication until your vet has examined the horse.
